Hello, families! This week in kindergarten we continued to learn school expectations and how to use materials safely and respectfully. We added some choice play time to the end of the day and I am happy with how the children have been playing cooperatively. (Photo below is of the sensory table.) All year we will work on social skills through play! Ask your child: What should you do if someone is doing something that bothers you or you want to stop? (This week we learned the script: "Stop. I don't like it when you...")

Here's a screenshot of our Play Choices. Ask your child which ones they tried out this week!

We began phonics instruction by learning the sound and correct formation for lowercase t, b, and f. In math, we are exploring how we can sort and re-sort objects many different ways. We sorted by color, shape, like/dislike, use, texture, and more! (Photo below)

Today we had our first Show and Tell! This year, we will have differently themed Show and Tells about once a month. Why spend time on this activity?

Show and Tell:

  • Teaches the sharer to tell about something in a voice others can hear and in sentences they can understand

  • Requires active listening

  • Provides a chance for listeners to pose relevant questions to the sharer

  • Requires patience and turn taking

All through the year we will build the above skills up! By the end of kindergarten, my goal is for every child to be able to effectively speak in front of the group and perhaps even more importantly, listen and respond to classmates appropriately. And I'm pretty sure they will have fun in the meantime!

Have a great weekend!
