This week at school was a fun mash-up of Election Day learning, fire safety, and Veteran’s Day!

We talked about why voting is an American right and responsibility. Since we have several more years until we can vote for real, we had our own little vote. Ask your child which option won on the ballot question: Would you like to have extra outside play or inside play? (Of course we honored the vote and had some extra playtime at the end of Election Day!)

Senior, Alex Olbeter, did his GS senior project on fire safety for kindergarten and first grades. The kids took part in fire safety discussions (Did your child ask you if you have changed your batteries in your smoke detectors?), had a visit from a fire truck, and met some search and rescue dogs!

PSA: Did you know that if you need smoke detectors, any fire station will give them out for FREE and even come to your house to install?! Now that’s service!

We've spent a few weeks talking about veterans and our great country. We helped to decorate the gym for today's breakfast full of honored guests! The kids delivered a spirited rendition of America to Me and then the whole school surrounded the veterans and their families, singing God Bless the USA. I'm pretty sure there weren't too many dry eyes in the house. Whether students know someone who has served our country or not, Nicely's Veteran's Day tradition really serves BOTH the veterans AND the students. Here is a short clip of the last verse- turn your volume up!

Happy Veteran's Day!
